April Ross
April Ross is only one of the few beach volleyball players who have earned medals more than once at an Olympics. Alix Klineman, playing for the first time at the Tokyo Olympics is hoping to secure her third Olympic medal. Ross's dream is to earn her first Olympic Gold. Perhaps she has one opportunity, given that she is 39 years old. She remains optimistic that she can achieve top honors. Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she resided with her parents and her sister. Along with participating in a variety of sport, she also attended Newport Harbor High School. She has won numerous events, and one was won by an iconic volleyball player. From 2007 to 2013 she was in a partnership by Jennifer Kessy, who is the coach she is currently. Alongside Kessy Ross was an ace in the world circuit, winning the world championship in 2009. In 2012, the duo took silver in London's Olympics. Misty Maytreanor (Jennings) as well as Misty Maytreanor clinched gold beating them to it. Ross Jennings was May-Treanor's replacement as she left the team. Both went on to win the bronze beach volleyball trophy in the Rio Olympics in 2016 along with Walsh Jennings. Ross was a college athlete at USC Trojans prior to beginning her pro career. She was a player in high school and in years prior to hitting the beach professionally. She had a great run during her time in the NCAA tournament. When she was a freshman in 2000 the Trojans' performance earned her the Pac-10 and NCAA Young Player of the Year awards. She was also a key player to help the Trojans reach it to the Final Four. Her heart was broken through a tragedy in her life during her second year, but she was able to make it an All-American again. In her last two years she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain and clinched consecutive national championships. As an individual, she established herself as an all-time great by winning the 2003-04 Honda Sports Award as the nation's top female collegiate volleyball player. Ross studied international relations at USC. Margie Ross wasn't able to see her daughter's climb to beach volleyball fame. Ross suffered the loss of the breast cancer that she battled in 2001.
